      Michael Wallwork:

During my previous experience as a District Traffic Engineer in Melbourne, Australia, recently voted the most livable city in the world, I developed a design perspective that streets were to be designed for people, pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers, and because the function of streets varies, we cannot apply the same design standards to all streets.

During my work in Melbourne safety for all people was paramount. However, the old methods, traffic signals, all-way stop control flashing lights are usually inadequate. To make streets and highways safer we need medians, roundabouts, traffic calming, and new people friendly road designs.
